Dev Colleagues, the new “JavaScript Full Stack Developer” audio and ebook is part of the “Interview Prodigy” (https://tinyurl.com/57ehhjb2) series. (Audible) (Kindle) In our Week 2 article the focus turns to “Career Paths”” to this book written to help software developers and engineers achieve their career goals.
Chapter 1 - Career Paths
In this chapter, we will look at a JavaScript developer's career paths, titles, and salaries. But first, let's get into the nitty-gritty of who a JavaScript developer is and what they do. As a developer in JavaScript, your job is to write JavaScript codes that define how a given web application's visual elements behave and connect it with back-end services. You might also be responsible for building and designing a whole website. However, some JavaScript developers are required to work on only one component.
Overview
Before we get into everything you need to know as a JavaScript developer in the hiring process, let's look at the difference between Java and JavaScript. Most people get both mixed up. Although they are similar, this similarity only exists in their name and nothing more. First, JavaScript isn't a subset or a variant of Java. Java is a strictly object-oriented programming language. All the programs written in it are executed in the Java virtual machine (JVM) and combined internally into bytecode. Therefore, developers can use this bytecode and install the JVM on any platform. You can run the same application in an OS by using the bytecode. As a platform-independent language, once Java is written, you can run it on any platform. Let's look at each more closely.
As stated earlier, Java is an Object-oriented programming language because it uses an OOP approach to data and methods. When we say Java is a programming language, we mean that code is first compiled before execution. Statistically, Java is a typed language. Meaning variables are known after the codes are compiled. And this helps in catching the errors early during development. Because it is a compiled language, Java code is compiled into bytecode before it is executed. After the code has been compiled, it is not reachable by humans. However, it needs to be compiled by installing a Java virtual machine (JVM), and this is where the execution of the code occurs. Java code is usually portable since the JVM helps abstract away the underlying OS.
As an object-oriented scripting language, JavaScript uses the OOP approach. However, this does not mean that it is not a scripting language. More so, no explicit compilation is needed before you can execute JavaScript code. In addition, JavaScript language is dynamic, unlike Java. And as a dynamically typed language, variables are checked at the time of execution. This makes coding quicker; however, errors will be caught much later during the development.
Developers store JavaScript codes in plain text and interpret these codes in real-time without interpretation. At the same time, it runs in a web browser. As a Developer, you will find that JavaScript run time environments offer an alternative route to executing JavaScript code outside the browser.
Why Should You Learn JavaScript in 2023
As the only language which runs on the browser, JavaScript is used by every country around the globe. It is used for developing applications in front-end and back-end using Node.js. This allows JavaScript to work outside the web browser. As a Developer, you can build a new application using JavaScript. And unlike other languages used in programming, JavaScript is relatively easier to learn because it offers simple syntax like common English.
As a beginner, you will find it easier to navigate through JavaScript because it is a beginner-friendly programming language. Also, the fact that it is quite popular and growing explains why everyone utilizes it. And it gives you full control over your web pages. As stated in the introduction of this series, JavaScript Developers are in high demand. More so, several companies around the world use it, and this includes Facebook, Uber, and Google. Key things to note:
JavaScript helps websites function better. Its functionality feature allows us to create web pages that are both interactive and dynamic.
Additionally, JavaScript is a client-side programming language. Your CPU will do all the heavy lifting to prevent server load or bandwidth.
Anyone can learn JavaScript without having prior experience in programming.
JavaScript is widely used to develop web pages.
JavaScript doesn't depend on platforms.
As a programming language, JavaScript is versatile. Once anyone gets a hold of it, there's much you can do with it. For example, you can code on the client-side (front end) through Angular and on the server-side (back end) using Node.js. Additionally, you can develop applications for websites, mobile phones, and desktops using React, React Native, and Electron. With this, you can also get involved in machine learning.
What are the requirements to learn JavaScript?
No prerequisites exist before you can learn JavaScript. However, if your knowledge of HTML and CSS is good, you can start your career in JavaScript. HTML is the essential language for building website applications and is used for putting content on a website. For example, it lets you insert texts, images, links, and videos. Also, you can use CSS to style whatever content you insert using HTML.
What can you do with JavaScript after learning it?
Once you have learned JavaScript, you can do the following:
People who have learned JavaScript can create dynamic and interactive web pages. For example, you can use Angular on the client or front end while on the server or back end, Node.js.
You can create animations on web pages.
Using the JavaScript library pixi.js, you can develop games.
JavaScript can also create animated graphics, scrolling videos, interactive maps, etc.
You can use JavaScript back-end to streamline how your entire website functions.
Your day-to-day as a JavaScript Developer
As stated earlier, JavaScript developers are responsible for writing JavaScript codes that define how web page visual elements behave and connect them with back-end services. As a developer, you may be responsible for a whole website, including building and designing. However, sometimes your responsibilities may be restricted to one component. Usually, JavaScript developers work on a team comprising Designers, Full Stack Developers, Front End Developers, Back End Developers, and Content Creators. This tram reports to senior managers or project managers.
JavaScript developers can work in almost every industry. This is mostly because it is the most popular language in the world and the core of most web pages. JavaScript developers work at corporations, startups, government organizations, medical companies, retail outlets, and many more.
Also, there are opportunities for remote and onsite developers and freelance options. If you want to be self-employed, there are also opportunities for you. The JavaScript developer's schedule is the usual 40-hour working week unless you work as a freelancer or for a startup.
Nevertheless, each organization or workplace will assign JavaScript developers workloads that are slightly different. However, they are all expected to code a web page or application using JavaScript. They are also expected to test the code they write; field help desk tickets, design pages on websites or apps, learn new frameworks, assess pull requests, or be part of team meetings or standups.
Skills JavaScript Developers Are Expected to Have
As a JavaScript Developer, you must be proficient in JavaScript and other JavaScript frameworks such as Ember, Angular JS, or React.js. Others include libraries like jQuery and Backbone.js. It is also recommended that you know CSS and HTML. In addition, every Developer needs to understand how to use version control tools Git enterprise and Git. Finally, most employers may consider Adobe Photoshop skills and Basic search engine optimization (SEO) as a plus, but they aren't always required.
Also, you will be required to work on a team, so you must have strong communication skills. As a Developer, you will need to talk to non-coders regarding your plans and what type of technology they are using. JavaScript Developers should be efficient coders who create quality work in a reasonable amount of time. Also, considering the constant evolution of technology and coding languages, JavaScript Developers need to stay up-to-date with the latest changes and best practices. Developers should also learn new technologies as their career progresses.
According to Indeed.com, a JavaScript Developer in the United States makes an average of $111,922 yearly. Below is a breakdown of some states in the US:
San Francisco: $128,547
New York: $121,000
San Jose, CA: $120,000
Washington, DC: $120,000
Boston: $118,000
Oakland: $117,000
Seattle: $116,000
Based on the above, you can see that salaries vary by state in the United States.

Since this book focuses on front-end development, let's end this chapter by looking at the difference between this and the alternative back-end.
What is Front End Development?
As a front-end developer, you will be building with the user in mind. Front-end development is a type or style of computer programming that focuses on coding and creating the elements and features of a website that the user will see. Their job is to ensure that the visual aspects of a website function optimally.
Another way to look at it is this: they're the "client-side" of the application. For instance, as a front-end developer, your job will be to code and ensure the visual aspects of a website come to life. Additionally, your focus will be primarily on what the user can see when they are on a website or application. Finally, your job will also be to ensure that it is easy to interact on the website and that the website or application runs smoothly.
These developers bring the visuals to life by taking the UX and UI designers' designs and ensuring they function smoothly and comfortably for the user. There are several ways to use front-end skills. And one of them is to create a static website, such as a website with fixed content delivered to a user's browser just the same way it is stored. However, you may run into a static website should you stumble upon a simple landing page or a small business website that doesn't let users do interactive tasks.
As a front-end developer, you will be building elements like:
Buttons
Layouts
Navigation
Images
Graphics
Animations
Content organization
What is Back-End Development?
Back-end development focuses on the side website users will be unable to see. This is the part that makes a site interactive. The back end can also be called the "server side." For example, imagine that you are running a social page. You need to have a place you can easily access to store all information from your users. This storage center can be called a database. A few widely used include SQL servers, Oracle, and MySQL. We run databases from a server, and a server is essentially a computer existing remotely. Therefore, a back-end developer will help you with managing your database along with the contents of your website stored on it. This effectively ensures that your social media website's front-end elements function continuously as users browse, chat, upload profiles, and do other things.
Users do not interact directly with the back end of the website. Still, they can indirectly interact with elements developers have worked on using front-end applications. For example, Back-end development deals with storing and arranging data, and at the same time, it ensures that the front-end functions optimally.
Back-end developers work on the following tasks:
Building code
Troubleshooting and debugging web applications
Database management
Framework utilization
Front End Skills
Some front-end skills include:
Breaking interesting problems apart and designing solutions that are engaging and interactive.
Creating, designing, and modifying static web pages which conform to specifications for HTML5.
Analyze the client-side performance of a web page to understand a user's experience.
Imagine creating mobile-friendly interactive applications that can be adopted on websites using the latest web technologies, including HTML 5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), and React.
Pairing those skills with back-end technologies such as databases and Node.js and Developer tools like Git, automated tests, and Bash.
Understanding how to work and collaborate on a software project effectively. Also, understand how to carry out interviews with confidence.
Back End Skills
They can level up with a second, popular language, such as Python 2&3, along with its most common web framework, Django. They can also apply language features such as lists, sets, and dictionaries for simple algorithmic tasks.
They can become adept at interacting with technologies behind the scenes, such as databases and servers. They're also adept at solving complex sets of problems.
They're also great at identifying and fixing web application bottlenecks and providing viable solutions to improving specific bottlenecks in a sample application.
They help applications run faster, more securely, more stable, and more efficiently.
Finally, JavaScript jobs have a promising future ahead. People with this qualification and skill can also work in the banking, insurance, and retail industry because they rely on one or two forms of software that may likely operate with JavaScript. However, if you work hard, remain diligent, and are committed in this field, you will advance toward a successful path.
