CIOs & Dev colleagues, the PopularitY of Programming Language Index - 2022 (GitHub) reveals some key trends in the use of software by developers. Over the long-term Python continues to be the most popular language, growing +9.6% by a wide margin, while Java had the biggest decline of -4.7% over the last five years. A one year period, however, paints a different picture. While ranked #1: Python held a 28.3% share; a decline of 1.8%.# Ranked Java had a 17.2% share; losing -0.9%. Among the gainers JavaScript (no surprise here) captured 9.6% share, a +0.4% increase. Three lesser known, yet robust nextgen languages must be noted. Ranked #8: TypeScript had a 2.71% share, increasing by +1.1%. Ranked # 13: Rust held a 1.57% share; an +0.8% increase. And finally, ranked #17: Scala held a 0.78% share, increasing +0.78%. Google Trends is a leading indicator used by the PYPL Index. The PopularitY of Programming Language Index is created by measuring the number of language tutorial searches on Google.
Conclusions: First, Python, Java and JavaScript remain the undisputed top languages used by developers. And second, languages such as TypeScript, Rust and Scala - although more application-specific languages - demand close scrutiny. In either case, enhancing your skills through best in-class certification and training programs will help you and your dev teams maintain a competitive edge in the global software development and programming arena.
